SO glad the semester is over. it was super hectic. i'm enjoying my few days here in MI before heading back to NC on thursday for about a week and a half or so. i've kind of been a lazy bum the past couple of days, but it was due. i had a fair bit of tv/movies to catch up with, but i'm not even close. i must say... frost/nixon? awesome. milk? awesome as well. i also saw this movie called kabluey today, which i kind of adored. if only i could always spend my days like this...

[16 Jun 2008|09:42pm] |
Today is a good day for Carolina basketball... while we were in the final four last year, it figured that 3 of our underclassmen declared for the draft, which is understandable. i was pleasantly surprised when tyler decided to stay, but today was the last day to decide whether or not to stay in the draft and all three of the underclassmen decided to stay instead. lawson, ellington, and green are back! with our recruiting class, we'll be pretty much unstoppable next season. it is march madness yet?

The end of the semester is in sight, but it will be quite hectic until then. *shudders* Upcoming I have:
3/24: OpEd, Bibliography, Reflection paper due 3/25: Policy Research Paper Due 3/26: Registraton for fall semester (i have no idea what to take yet) 3/29: movie review paper due 4/1: 20 page research paper due, class presentation 4/8: class presentation 4/11: mini-grant due 4/14: 20 article critiques due 4/15: final exam 4/16: internship evaluation materials due 4/21: final exam 4/22: final exam
Then i'm done! It's gonna suck. I haven't been very productive this weekend, so I need to do a lot today. Plus, i've been enjoying March Madness. Go Heels! So happy that Duke lost yesterday. So today will be paper researching and writing and enjoying some bball.

So I heard back about my internship much earlier in the week than I expected. And i got it! Woot! I'll be doing a three day a week (one day more than this semester... my life will be hell!) placement at UMich's Inpatient Adult Psychiatric Unit. It'll be super intense, but i'm SO excited about it. Plus, I'm glad I don't have to interview any place else. That's all set now. I register for fall semester next week. It seems too soon! haha.
Also, i was a rather productive busy bee on the summer job front. I talked to three separate professors about opportunities they knew about. One was rather helpful, the other not so much, but was nice about it. The third I emailed and while he wasn't very good about offering community opportunities (not surprising since he's new to the school and ann arbor) he did help a bit with research assistantship. He said there were some possibilities he was going to check on and see if they were feasible. Now I don't know if that means they are related to HIS studies (which would be nice, since his area is schizophrenia), or with someone else. He wasn't specific. Hopefully I'll get more information soon. Otherwise, I'm not quite sure where to look next.
So all in all a productive weeks so far. I need to continue to be though because I have a bunch of school work (mostly papers) that's due soon. We'll hope tomorrow is more productive than most of my Wednesdays.

Well, break was entirely too short and now i'm back in michigan and what is it doing? snowing! again!
Break was lovely, but not long enough. It also didn't help that I didn't have a lot of downtime while I was there. I'm glad I did all the assignments that absolutely had to be done during break before I left because I got very little done while I was in NC. The weather was lovely though. In addition I was able to get together with several people I wasn't able to over winter break. I got to meet the new Harrison baby. Kira is the most adorable thing ever! I also saw Jocelyn, who's now over a year old and has gone straight from crawling to running around! I was able to get together with one of my old co-workers at duke, which was great. We were able to gab about the study and basically everything we thought would happen when I left did. They really needed to hire a new person, and didn't and i feel bad that Catherine gets all the crap when the shit hits the fan and it gets passed down the line. At least before it was spread out between the two of us. I was also able to see a winterguard show and catch up with all of my assembly liners. The show is adorable this year. The only downer was that I got into a fender bender my last night at home. I wasn't hurt, but the car's bumper will probably need to be replaced. The guy behind me obviously wasn't paying attention whatsoever, because i was stopped at a red light for a while before he hit me. I am so glad kelly and her hubby were there to deal with that with me.
So, anywho, i got back to michigan sunday evening and have been crazy with school work again. My community profile project is now finally in the last stages. Today was the date that all the group materials were due as well as the group presentation. I think it went fine. I still have my individual paper due on Friday, that I'm hoping to work on tomorrow and get it out of the way. I never want to do anything when i get back from my internship on thursdays and fridays.
On a nice note to end, my hellacious couple of weeks before break panned out well grade wise. I really worked hard, managed to not have a mental breakdown, so i'm rather pleased. 606 mental illness movie portrayal paper: 10/10 606 midterm (closed book exam): 24.5/25 636 policy paper: 19/20 628 interpersonal midterm: 99% <-i'm SO happy about this. my hand is still cramped thinking about that damn blue book.
and finally two fun quizzes: 77
69 wordsSpeedtest *snicker* yes, i'm 12.

[27 Feb 2008|02:13am] |
Well, I just got back from a concert... Matt Costa with Johnathan Rice opening for him. I'd seen Johnathan before when I saw Ben Gibbard. I still enjoyed him. I wasn't as impressed with Matt as i thought I would be, but it was still worth the 14 bucks. It was my first time at the Blind Pig. I assumed it would be about Cats Cradle size, but it's definitely smaller, which makes me think I seriously need to see peeps when they come there, since you're basically right on top of the stage. The bad part? Standing outside while it was snowing for a good 40 minutes... not so fun. Also it's a smoking club... which isn't horrid, but I forget how much I reek of cigarettes when I get out. I realize that the rest of my semester is going to be like concert crazy. I've got all of these lined up:
-March 14th - A Fine Frenzy @ Shelter, Detroit -March 16th - Mike Doughty (woot!) @ Blind Pig, Ann Arbor -April 10th - Feist @ Fillmore, Detroit -April 18th - Iron & Wine (wooot!) @ Royal Oak Music Hall, Royal Oak -April 30th - Kate Nash @ Saint Andrews, Detroit
Craziness! They should all be worth it though. I'm flying back home to North Carolina tomorrow evening and will be there through Sunday afternoon, so any of my NC folks on my FL, let me know if you want to get together. It'll be a short trip, but should be a nice break in the semester..

I know I've been crappy with updating the past couple of weeks. This is mostly due to the craziness that it school at the moment. Luckily, the light is at the end of the tunnel.
In the past two weeks i have had 3 papers, 2 closed book midterm exams, turning in field placement materials for next year, doing a class presentation, and preparing for another. I"m sure I'm forgetting stuff as well. Even though I was good about time management, I was really overwhelmed by the end of it all. I did already get back a paper (10/10!) and an exam (24.5/25), so that makes me feel better.
Tonight was my first night leading the family therapy group at my placement. It went well, but it was a bit anxiety-inducing. It was good for me to do though. I've been observing for a while and at the last meeting I led the beginning of it. Good topic to work on tonight as well... coping with a loved one's lack of motivation. I think we made some progress.
I'm looking forward to break. I do have some work left to do this week. I have a group presentation the Tuesday I get back from break and need to prepare the group community profile pamphlet. It shouldn't be difficult... just time consuming. I'm pretty much the only one in the group with any graphical ability, so I volunteered. We've had to do so much work for this project. It's a good thing I love the group. That's another thing about this semester. I feel like I'm getting along with more people and have more people to talk to during breaks and class. While I still don't go out and do much with people outside of class, I'm not feeling quite as alone here.
I've got some reports to do this week for my internship as well, but they shouldn't be too difficult to finish. I got word from my field advisor that she's submitted my application materials to the inpatient adult psychiatric unit at UMich. It's my top placement. She said that I'm at an advantage having my first placement at ACT, but we'll see. I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much, because it's a competitive placement. I'll hopefully hear about an interview soon.
That's about it. I'm heading back to NC for break next week from Tuesday to Sunday which should be fun. I'll try and get together with several friends and get to meet the new Harrison baby... maybe check out a winterguard show as well. It'll be nice to see the parents as well and a bit of a break from the winter weather here. I do need to do some reading and work while I'm at home in NC though. Bummer. It shouldn't be too bad though.

it's currently 4 degrees outside with wind gusts over 50 mph... picture me, this carolina girl walking through campus to get to the library. brrr!
the week's been productive for me. i've actually stayed pretty much on task with my to-do lists this week. I have such an insane amount of stuff due before break, I really needed to plan it out so I don't have a major meltdown by the end of next week. So far I'm on track to be semi-sane still by break.
I just got to the library and am going to try and churn out as much work as possible before it closes at 6 and give myself the evening off if I feel like it. I need some veg time before another full day of it tomorrow. I have a presentation in my class, which I think will go okay, but I loathe having to talk in front of a class. One on one and groups are fine, but in front of a class? *shudder* I then meet with my community organization group later in the afternoon, so plan to spend the time in between in the library continuing to work on crap for next week.
My to-do list for today: -complete and submit second year placement materials to field office -run census data on 560 group population for meeting tomorrow -brainstorming/outlining dsmIV class paper... if have time, start writing.
Totally do-able. *tries to pump self up*

so i'm watching the carolina basketball game, and who's there? john edwards. if he hadn't pulled out of the race yesterday, he would be at a debate right now. heh. love it that the thing he does the day after leaving the race is go to a carolina game. tar heel love forever. i still get a kick out of my mom telling me she saw elizabeth edwards at the gas station down the road from them. i forget how close their "house" is to the parents.
i wish edwards was still in the race. i'm still undecided who i want to vote for, but i liked having him in there too.

i swear the amount of schoolwork i have this semester is insane. last semester was easy in comparison. i've been working several hours a day on reading and getting ahead on schoolwork and just when i think i'm making progress, all these other deadlines seem looming closer and closer. i was looking at second year internship placements and i was looking into the counseling services through the university, but the application process seems rather daunting and a bit excessive. i mean, i got into the program... i'm not a complete idiot. *sigh* perhaps that wouldn't be the best for me anyways, since i probably need their assistance more than giving my own there. i'm a bit overwhelmed and it's only a couple of weeks into the semester. this doesn't bode well for me.

I just saw Atonement and weeped like a baby. Ahh the sweeping tragic period romances...
Actually I also watched Lars and the Real Girl as well earlier in the day because i pretty much adore ryan gosling's acting. I know some people didn't enjoy, but I ended up really liking it.
Guess it was a movie day for me... instead of doing schoolwork instead. I have reading up to wazoo this semester.

i am not ready for the semester to start up again tomorrow. The one good thing being there are only two days of my internship before I have the weekend before classes start. Usually I would be more worried about classes starting, but I'm really not looking forward to going back to the internship, and i'm not exactly sure why. I really enjoy working with the clients, but, well, i don't know. It is was it is. I guess with any job, the honeymoon period is over.
On a better note, my macbook should be arriving tomorrow or friday hopefully. woot!

so my financial aid was put into my student account this week. can i tell you again how happy i am that i'm now getting scholarships/grants this year which i hadn't originally planned on?
since i didn't have it last semester and they gave me a refund for the recently acquired scholarships for the fall in addition to this upcoming semester's financial aid of loans and grants/scholarships. The tuition that is normally over $15,000 for the semester (yeah, OUCH)... this semester's bill is for:
$30.69.
I'll take it! *dances*
